The Haiti Earthquake took place almost 5 years ago but the country is still reeling from its effects.  The country is on a conservative margin and is prone to quakes but this one was huge!!Fault lines in the Caribbean

This is the powerpoint we used in lesson. Haiti Quake January 12th 2010 (3).  It introduces the causes and explains the long and short term effects for the country.

For the case study questions you will need to be able to remember specific facts (like the numbers we collected in lesson) but you’ll also need to be able to describe the effects of the earthquake on the Haitians and the simulator on the first page of the powerpoint will help you to do that.

MILITARY RELIEF EFFORTS IN HAITI

Pick which character you want to be (journalist, aid worker or survivor) and then work through their experience.  Make sure you get a photo of you working through it or a signature in your diary from apparent saying that you have done this.

Montserrat is an Island in the Caribbean.  It is on the edge of the Caribbean Plate and as a result it is volcanic

In 1995 the volcano in the south of the island, Soufriere Hills erupted and buried much of the south of the Island and the capital, Plymouth.

Your task, in your group is to decide how best to rebuild the south of the Island.  You have four years and £84 Million to spend.

Each year you need to have a target or priority e.g. Build transport and energy infrastructure or focus on food and drink production.  You then have to plan how to spend your money to achieve this.

You should present these ideas next lesson in your groups.  Attached are a copy of the Price List and a GREAT EXAMPLE
